Vinyl & LVP Construction & Materials

Vinyl flooring is a synthetic floorboard that is composed of several layers: the backing layer which rests on the subfloor, the core (either rigid or flexible), a printed design layer and a protective layer on top to prevent wear and tear. Luxury Vinyl Plank flooring (LVP) is meant to mimic the appearance of hardwood and is a higher-end product that regular. Luxury Vinyl Tile flooring (LVT) is meant to look like stone or ceramic tile. The wear layer thickness (which is measured in millimeters) indicates how well it resists wear and scratching. Flooring with a higher wear layer thickness is more durable and long lasting, but can also be more expensive. Two of the most common core types are wood plastic composite (WPC) and stone plastic composite (SPC). These two core types add more stability than a standard flexible vinyl.

Flooring Durability & Performance

With proper case and maintenance, hardwood floors can last between 50 to 100+ years before requiring hardwood floor replacement, making them one of the most durable flooring surfaces you can use. The lifetime of your stained hardwdood floor can be extended by sanding down and refinishing it. This can typically be done 4-6 times throughout the life of the floor. Wood flooring is susceptible to humidity and temperature fluctuations, so it’s not recommended for high moisture areas such as below grade installations (basements), bathrooms or laundry rooms. Some issues that can arise when not properly acclimated and maintained are cupping (edge of the planks rises higher than its center) , gapping between the boards, and contracting (shrinking of the planks). Hardwood performs best in living rooms, hallways, dining rooms and bedrooms where moisture is low and the temperature is constant. Our installers can help you decide which rooms are best suited for hardwood flooring and advise on proper maintenance to ensure you enjoy the benefits of your floors for decades to come.

Vinyl Style & Design

Vinyl and LVP flooring is extremely durable and resistant to dents, scratches, and daily wear. Most types are also 100% waterproof, making them among the most dynamic flooring materials for high-moisture areas like kitchens, bathrooms, mudrooms, entryways, and basements, offering luxury waterproof flooring. It’s also a great fit for households with children or pets and is commonly used in high-traffic areas like hallways and living spaces. The rigid core in SPC resists denting from heavy furniture, so it is typically recommended in living rooms and bedrooms over standard vinyl. If well maintained, LVP can last 15-20 years, with premium lines lasting even longer. LVP is a great option for residential and commercial locations. Vinyl Plank Flooring Installation Cost & Process

One of the advantages of laying vinyl and LVP is it is generally more affordable than natural hardwood or stone with a comparable high-end look and feel. There are several common installation methods for vinyl floorboards, such as click-lock, glue-down, and loose-lay. This offers different options depending on the room or subfloor conditions. Rigid-core luxury vinyl plank flooring can be installed over the existing floor, saving time and money on materials and labor. Laying vinyl plank flooring doesn’t require sanding, staining, grouting, or curing, making it cheaper and faster to install than wood or tile. The cost to install vinyl flooring will vary depending on the materials, the size and shape of the area, and the existing floor or subfloor.

Vinyl & LVP Maintenance

Vinyl is one of the lowest-maintenance flooring types available. Regular sweeping or vacuuming, along with occasional mopping, is usually all that is required to keep your floors looking new. It is recommended to use vinyl-specific cleaning products to protect the wear layer. Once the coating is scuffed or scratched, it can’t be sanded or refinished, so make sure to use protective pads on furniture legs to protect your floor. Fixing damaged vinyl flooring usually requires replacing the planks.

Difference between Vinyl & Luxury Vinyl Planks (LVP)

Vinyl flooring is an umbrella term that covers all types of resilient vinyl products. Luxury Vinyl Plank is a premium category within the family of vinyl flooring. The primary difference between the two is a matter of construction quality, layer thickness and visual realism. LVP is composed of several layers and a flexible or rigid core, whereas standard vinyl is usually a single vinyl floor layer or a simple multi-layer sheet. LVP tends to be more substantial and feel more solid underfoot, whereas standard vinyl is more flimsy and more prone to telegraphing the subfloor surface. LVP usually has a thicker wear layer (between 12-20+ millimeters) so it is more resistant to dents and scratches. LVP is engineered to mimic the appearance of natural wood or in the case of premium Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT), it gives the luxury vinyl plank stone look, which can make it indistinguishable from the real thing, whereas standard vinyl patterns tend to be flatter and more repetitive and read more clearly as a synthetic material. LVP is more ofter waterproof, so it’s the better option if you are looking for vinyl plank waterproof flooring. If the budget permits, Luxury vinyl flooring is usually the better investment in terms of look, durability and functionality. For cases where pricing is the main factor, then standard vinyl plank flooring is a suitable alternative. To learn more and get a free quote, call our vinyl installers now.
