Why We Like Carpet
Carpet creates a warm and cozy environment that is comfortable to walk on and great for households with children or elderly family members. It dampens sound and is one of the most cost effective flooring options due to its low materials and installation cost. It also comes in a wide variety of colors, textures and designs, so it can easily match with almost any decor style. Although it’s not suited for every room in the home, it does go well in bedrooms, family rooms, dens and living rooms. Carpet Construction & Materials
Carpet is a soft, fiber-based flooring covering and is one of the most widely used flooring options in America. It is made by tufting or weaving yarn into a woven back material. These are the most common fiber types:
- Nylon – is the top choice for high-traffic areas in homes and businesses, as it bounces back well from crushing or matting, making it a highly durable and resilient material.
- Polyester – more economical than nylon, this material has high stain resistance and comes in a wide range of vibrant colors.
- Olefin (polypropylene) – often used in basements or areas prone to humidity as it is naturally resistant to moisture and stains.
- Triexta – a new fiber that is durable and comparable to nylon but with additional stain resistance.
- Wool – famous for its luxurious feel, softness and durability, this natural fiber is a premium option that comes at a higher price point and is less resistant to staining.
Tufted carpet is produced by pushing thousands of yarn loops through a backing material using rows of needles. The production is highly automated and can produce loop pile or cut pile, allowing manufacturers to make different types of carpet from the same construction method. Tufted carpet is the most commonly used type of carpeting in residential installations due to its cost-effectiveness. Woven carpet is produced on a loom, and the pile yarn is interlaced directly with the backing during weaving. This is a slower method, but it produces a denser, more durable carpet that retains its shape and resists matting or crushing. Commercial carpet is designed for high-traffic areas and features low pile height and dense lopped fibers.
Comfort & Benefits
The carpet’s pile and underlay offer a soft, cushioned flooring surface that is comfortable to walk and sit on. It can be more comfortable than harder flooring materials for standing for long periods. Living room carpet is an inviting surface for children to play on. It’s a great option for households with elderly family members as it reduces the risk of injury and softens falls. Carpet fibers trap air, which provides natural insulation, possibly reducing heating or cooling costs. Carpet is a popular choice for reducing noise between rooms or floors as it absorbs sound and dampens echoes and reverberations better than other flooring materials. This is particularly useful in multi-level homes, rental units, and apartments where noise could be disruptive to neighbors.
Carpet Style & Design
Carpet flooring offers more design flexibility than any other flooring type due to its vast range of colors, textures, and patterns. Neutral colors are popular for their versatility and resale appeal, offering a flexible base that pairs well with changing decor styles. Different pile styles create different looks and underfoot feels. Some common options include Saxony, plush, frieze, Berber (loop), and cut-and-loop. Multi-tonal or heathered colors (which have multiple shades of the same hue) create visual depth while hiding dirt or wear patterns better than single-tone carpet. Textured carpets create dimension and hide footprints and vacuum marks better than flat, smooth pile styles.

Carpeting Installation Cost & Process
A new carpet installation is generally the most cost-effective flooring option, in terms of both materials and labor. Pricing varies significantly based on pile density and fiber types, with wool on the premium end and synthetic fibers offering more budget-friendly options. Carpet padding is a separate cost and comes in different price points. Higher-end padding will be more comfortable, add greater insulation, and extend the life of your carpet. Carpet installation costs can depend on the type of carpet. It comes in either roll form (broadloom) or in tiles (sometimes called carpet squares). Roll carpet is stretched over the padding and secured to tack strips along the perimeter of the room. Laying carpet tiles offers a simple modular installation and allows individual tiles to be replaced if stained or damaged. In general, carpet laying is faster and less disruptive than any other flooring type, with carpet tile installation being the easiest. Wall-to-wall carpet can be preferable to area rugs because it replaces the flooring.
Maintenance
Regular vacuuming is required to remove grit and prevent it from breaking down the carpet fibers. It is recommended that a professional steam cleaning be conducted every 12- 18 months to remove embedded dirt, maintain appearance, and extend the carpet’s lifespan. Prompt spot cleaning and stain treatment will prevent permanent staining, particularly with treated nylon or polyester fibers. Washable carpet is preferred in households with family and pets as the risk of spills and stains is higher. Carpet has a shorter lifespan than other flooring types and typically can’t be repaired or refinished; it must be replaced once it has reached the end of its useful life. Carpet can last between 5 and 15 years, but it depends on fiber quality, density, and traffic levels. It’s important to choose the correct pile and fiber quality for high-traffic areas, as they can wear faster than in less busy parts of the house.
Where to Use Carpet
Carpet is a popular choice for bedrooms, living rooms, dens and family rooms that prioritize comfort over water resistance. It can work well in basements that require additional floor insulation, although it’s best to use moisture-resistant fibers such as olefin. Avoid using carpet in entryways, kitchens, bathrooms, or dining rooms where there is the risk of spills, food stains, moisture build-up, or heavy dirt. It’s better to go with a tile or LVP in those rooms. It can be used in high-traffic areas, but make sure to select a durable fiber pile and understand that it will wear faster than in other areas of the house. For non-residential uses, commercial carpet squares are most common as they are easy to replace in high-traffic areas.
